301 Redirects for SEO

A few months ago I did some redirects from a well ranking site to new sites. The new sites quickly lost the placement that the original pages had. This is going to show what effect the host domain has even, when supposedly transferring all link rank.

Now I am doing a redirect to a subdomain within the same site. My theory is that the rank will remain the same, or improve because I am also directing new links to that new page as well. I think it will be about one to two weeks before I see any results.
